Two years later, in 2011, it was further celebrated by the US National Geographic as one of the "top 10 geographic wonders in the world". These recognitions underscore the site's status as a natural wonder and a significant tourist attraction.
Tourism and Attractions
Zhangye Danxia has become a popular destination for tourists seeking to experience its awe-inspiring landscapes. To enhance the visitor experience, the region has introduced various activities such as scenic tours and aerial sightseeing. In 2016, the city of Zhangye began offering hot air balloon rides, providing tourists with a unique perspective of the colorful Danxia landform. The introduction of aerial entertainment has been an integral part of the area's tourism development strategy, attracting visitors from both domestic and international locations.
In July 2019, Zhangye hosted its first hot air balloon festival, which drew approximately 50,000 tourists and featured around 100 balloons lifting off over the course of two days. The event's success led to the continuation of the festival, with subsequent editions attracting thousands of visitors and contributing to the promotion of Zhangye as a prominent tourist destination.
